SEO for Legal Sites: Things to avoid

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is an integral part of making a website successful on the internet.  Without good SEO work, you’re not going to rank on the first page for the keywords you need.

A large part of SEO work includes using SEO professionals or unprofessionals.  The SEO industry is lucrative and attracts all walks of life.  However, there are plenty of SEO’s who are younger and not necessarily educated.

And why does this matter?  Well, a large part of SEO involves writing to forums, and writing some content.  And basically, you have a person who is unfamiliar and untrained in the legal field writing posts on a forum linking back to your site.    These same people are writing comments on blogs with links back to your page.

In the last few days I received a post in my forum and a comment on a blog with complete useless responses from a legal site that obviously hired an SEO specialist.  However, the comment and forum post were so spammy, that I had to remove it.

The point is, that when promoting a legal site, you should either 1. do it yourself. (maybe read up on the subject), 2. Hire professionals that you can trust, 3) Supervise your SEO company, you can write the articles, you can write the posts, and you can write the comments your self, and have the SEO place it for you.

Domains containing exact keywords

It has been argued over and over again by many SEO experts and enthusiast whether keywords within the domain name matters.  Well, I’m a firm believer and so I have collected domains heavily on that belief.  As well, many people have valued the domains with keywords as well, as those are the ones most commonlyregistered, sold and resold.

In the  Domain Roundtable 2008, Google’s Matt Cutt’s mentioned that keywords within a domain are given a certain amount of weight, even though they are not necessary to achieve a top ranking.

So what does this mean for the legal community.  Nothing new, but if you have a domain name like NewYorkLawyer.com versus FirstnameLastname.com, or Bubbalaw.com, you now know that not only will the generic domain name appeal more to the online searcher, but that it may give you more weight in the search rankings as well.

Something to consider as you start to brand your law firm or law practice online.  If you are looking for a generic domain name, check our portfolio and or email us as we have a rather large list.
